Former India captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, came into limelight after his maiden century against Pakistan at Visakhapatnam in 2005. Dhoni failed to make an impact during his earlier matches for India. But, it was in this match, when the world finally witnesses a future star of international cricket.
In his initial matches, Dhoni predominantly batted at No. 7. However, in this match he was promoted to No. 3 by the then India captain, Sourav Ganguly. India lost its first wicket in the form of Sachin Tendulkar (2) in the fourth over. The dismissal did not have any effect on Sehwag and Dhoni.
India crossed the 50-run mark in the sixth over and by the the 10th over, India had reached 89-1. Sehwag (74) and Ganguly (9) soon headed back to the pavilion. A determined Dhoni was now joined by Rahul Dravid. After 30 overs, India reached 211-3, with Dhoni batting on 89 (82).
In the 32nd over, with a single off Shahid Afridi, Dhoni completed his maiden century and went on to score 148 (123) with the help of 15 fours and four sixes. India posted 356-9 in 50 overs and went on to win the match by 58 runs. Watch Dhoni’s full innings:
