India all-rounder Washington Sundar did not get a place in the team of Aakash Chopra who picked his team for the T20 World Cup. Sundar missed out on the T20 World Cup 2021 owing to an injury he sustained on India’s tour of England.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra said: “I am not thinking about Washington Sundar at this point in time. He is there in mind but I am not convinced because his batting in T20s lower down the order, I am not particularly convinced. So I will probably not go towards him. If we talk about all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja is confirmed there. There will be no question there. It is Australia, so I would say there is no need to take too many spinners.”
While picking Venkatesh Iyer and Hardik Pandya as the two seam-bowling all-rounders, Aakash Chopra stated that Iyer is slightly ahead at the moment.
He observed: “I am keeping two players with Ravindra Jadeja – Venkatesh Iyer and Hardik Pandya. Venkatesh Iyer seems to be ahead at the moment but I won’t be surprised if Hardik Pandya wins this race. The two slots that are there for all-rounders – Ravindra Jadeja as spinning all-rounder, Hardik Pandya as a fast-bowling all-rounder, that’s it. Venkatesh Iyer’s name is there but the day Hardik starts bowling, I think he will pip Venkatesh Iyer to the post.”
While talking about the bowlers, he added that Jasprit Bumrah is a certain pick. He also feels Deepak Chahar has a slight edge over Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the moment. Moreover, he left out Harshal Patel.
He stated: “I am not taking Harshal’s name because I don’t think he will work there. You might think this guy is totally against Harshal Patel. I am not against but those pitches are different, the ball is not going to grip. I am not seeing him bowl with Bumrah at the death. Bumrah is confirmed amongst the fast bowlers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Deepak Chahar – Deepak Chahar is slightly ahead in my list because he bats as well. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is bowling better at the moment but eight months’ time is still left. So one out of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar.”
Aakash Chopra also wants the Indian selectors to choose at least one amongst Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Avesh Khan. He also believes Shardul Thakur has a remote chance of getting picked as well.
He explained: “Keep one amongst Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Avesh Khan at least because you need pace, you need bounce and all three of them have that. I won’t be too surprised if you want to keep two out of these three Mohammed Shami/T Natarajan/Khaleel – you want to take a left-armer along. That’s another thing, if you want to carry, left-armer is that X-factor. You will definitely look towards Mohammed Shami. He has not been kept in the team currently but he should be there.”
“Shardul Thakur – a very outside chance because Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar – similar kinds of players. Shardul is a middle-overs bowler, neither does he bowl at the death nor in the first six. Deepak Chahar gives you wickets at the start, Bhuvneshwar Kumar probably bowls better than both of them at the death. One spinner – Yuzi Chahal. You might say he should have been there in the last World Cup as well. I am saying that he should have been there but the ones doing the selection didn’t pick him. Yuzi Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja are your only two spinners – that’s it,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
