Bangladesh recalled veteran spinner Abdur Razzak in the Test squad in place of injured Shakib Al Hasan, who has sustained a finger injury during the Tri-series final against Sri Lanka. Shakib was ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka following the same injury, which will commence from January 31 in Chittagong.

The left-arm spinner Razzak played his last Test match four years ago against West Indies in 2014.

“It is not easy to find a replacement for Shakib. We need someone experienced to replace him. Sunzamul has yet to play any Test, so we recalled Razzak,” said chief selector Minhajul Abedin. “Now we will see his fitness in training before we finally include him in the playing team.”

Razzak is the most experienced bowler in Bangladesh and has over 200 ODI wickets. However, he couldn’t replicate the same success in Test cricket, where he played only 12 Test with 23 scalps in his kitty.

He showed his form with the red ball in the ongoing domestic first–class competition, Bangladesh Cricket League, where he took 20 wickets in three matches. During the same tournament, he became the first Bangladeshi player to take 500 wickets in first-class cricket.
