On Wednesday, former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni was in no mood of giving up when Team India was in trouble against New Zealand in the first semifinal of the ongoing ICC World Cup. Chasing 239, India was reeling at 5/3 after the first fours overs. Matt Henry and Trent Boult ran through India’s top-order to put New Zealand on top of the proceedings. Henry sent back Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul while Boult got the prized wicket of Virat Kohli. India soon found themselves 4 down for 24 as Dinesh Karthik also got dismissed.
By the time Dhoni came to the crease, a decent amount of damage was already was the Indian team was at 71 for 5 with Rishabh Pant back in the hut too. A little while later, Hardik Pandya got dismissed as well to leave the side 6 down for 92. The game looked all but over for Team India at that stage. But before New Zealand could make further inroads in the match, Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja almost saved the sinking ship
In fact, they gave the fans the hope that the men in blue can win with a stunning 116-run stand. However, with India needing 37 more runs, Jadeja mistimed a shot and got dismissed after scoring 77 off just 59 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and as many sixes. Dhoni tried for a while but a run-out ended his heroics too as India were all out for 221.
The defeat also ended Dhoni’s dreams of winning another World Cup. He managed to score 50 off 72 balls before getting dismissed. and after the match, legendary wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist took to Twitter to leave a beautiful message for his Indian counterpart. Gilchrist said that he was not sure of how long would Dhoni play before praising the India star.
Gilchrist tweeted: “Not sure if you are playing on but thanks @msdhoni You have given the game so much. Always admired your calmness and self belief”.
