Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that Ajinkya Rahane is quite fortunate that he is still part of the Indian Test team despite his poor run of form with the bat in the recent series. Gambhir believes the upcoming home series against New Zealand is an opportunity for Rahane to cash in.

Ajinkya Rahane had a torrid run of form in the Test cricket. Since his match-winning hundred during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, Rahane has only managed to put a solitary fifty-plus score. He was almost on the verge of getting dropped until he came up with a match-defining fifty at Lord’s earlier this year against England.

The upcoming Test series against New Zealand in home condition will serve a good opportunity for Rahane to cash in and get his mojo back. Virat Kohli is rested for the first Test in Kanpur and Rahane will be captaining the side as well.

Gautam Gambhir feels Shubman Gill should fill in Virat Kohli’s position in his absence and bat at number 4.

“I am going to open with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul because he opened in England and then probably Shubman Gill will bat at No. 4,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Talking about Rahane, Gambhir mentioned he should be looking forward to make this opportunity count.

“Plus, Rahane is pretty fortunate that he’s still part of this side because he’s leading… But again, he’s got another opportunity now, hopefully, he can make that count,” Gambhir added.

Team India registered a comprehensive victory in the three-match T20I series by completing a white-wash. The focus will now shift towards the Test cricket when India and New Zealand will commence the series on November 25 in Kanpur.
