South Africa pace bowler Anrich Nortje on Monday shared a memory of his regarding none other than former India captain MS Dhoni. It was way back in the 2010 Champions League T20 in South Africa when he thought Dhoni didn’t know how to use his feet and bat while he was bowling to him in the nets.
Notably, Nortje was called upon as a net bowler at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in that season. MS Dhoni was leading CSK and the speedster was of only 16 years old then.
“I wasn’t that big, so wasn’t scaring anyone. It was age group [that I was playing those days], so I wasn’t that quick,” said Nortje on The Grade Cricketer podcast. “I remember bowling to MS in the nets there. He didn’t look like he could bat to be honest. I didn’t realise it was him. He hit a couple of balls almost standing still and not using any feet as he does. [But] afterwards he was such a nice man to see everyone and realise who they were.”
However, Anrich Nortje said that as he is currently with his national team and they will play against West Indies in the white ball series. “I am not going to lie. I did think he didn’t know how to bat,” added the youngster. “It was a nice buildup seeing everyone around in the nets. They were just to block, get their eyes in.”
Meanwhile, the South Africa pacer has helped Delhi Capitals to qualify for the final of the Indian Premier League last season in the UAE, taking 22 wickets as well. However, MS Dhoni-led CSK registered a win in the Champions League T20 beating South African local team Warriors in the final by eight wickets as well.
MS Dhoni had scored 91 in five innings with the highest score of 31 not out. Chennai Super Kings won the title again in 2014 as well. As far as the 2021 Indian Premier League is concerned, the league was suspended midway after several players and support staff got infected by the virus. The league will resume in the UAE in September-October as well.
