During the second ODI against India at Eden Park in Auckland, an interesting incident took place. New Zealand fielding coach Luke Ronchi was forced to come on as a substitute fielder as the Kiwis were suffering from a spate of injury concerns. Ronchi last represented New Zealand in 2017 and came back on the field once again in the 37th over as all the fit substitute players were already there.

New Zealand have been suffering from a lot of issues, with pace bowler Scott Kuggeleijn down with the flu and Mitchell Santner suffering from a stomach bug as well. Because of this, both Kuggeleijn and Santner did not take place in the playing XI for the game.

Mark Chapman came in place for Santner while New Zealand have given the debut cap to pacer Kyle Jamieson. In the game, India won the toss and opted to bowl first. However, New Zealand openers Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls added 93 runs where Henry scored 41 before getting dismissed.

Guptill went on to hit more and smashed run-a-ball 79 with 8 fours and 3 sixes. However, New Zealand lost their middle-order and tailenders very quickly as they failed to reach the double-digit. Except for Ross Taylor, who scored another composed 73 off 74 with 6 fours and 2 sixes and helped his side put up a total of 273 on board after 50 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal bagged 3 wickets for India.

Chasing 274, India openers Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal failed to provide with a flying start. Even the captain Virat Kohli too fell for 15. In-form KL Rahul and Kedar Jadhav couldn’t reach the double-digit as well. However, Shreyas Iyer scored 52 off 57, Ravindra Jadeja’s 55 off 73 and 45 off 49 from Navdeep Saini took India to 251. However, their total was not enough to get past the line and India eventually lost by 22 runs.

With this win, New Zealand won the series as well.
