During South Africa’s tour of India in 1996, having been hurt on the arm, former India captain, Mohammad Azharuddin, replied back to the Proteas in style. Having won the toss, Hansie Cronje, the then South African captain, had won the toss and elected to bat in the second Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

On the back of centuries from the South African openers, Andrew Hudson (146) and Gary Kirsten (102), the visitors scored 428-10 in 121.1 overs. Venkatesh Prasad was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he has picked up his second Test five-wicket haul, 35-6-104-6.

In reply, India failed to convert their decent start into a substantial score as they slipped from 68-1 to 77-3. At 87-3, what came as a major blow to them was the fact that Mohammad Azharuddin had to retire hurt after receiving a fierce blow on his arm.

At 161-7, with the danger of follow-on reeling, he had no other option than to come back and resume his innings. He dealt with all the short stuff from the South African bowler with a big heart and seemed sure of what he was doing. Frequent pulls and cuts saw him complete his 15th Test century, 109 (77) with the help of 18 fours and a six.
