Bangladesh Tour of Ireland Pushed Back Due to Coronavirus

Ireland’s upcoming seven-match series against Bangladesh became another addition on Saturday in the list of latest cancelled series on the cricket calendar by the pandemic coronavirus across the globe. The three-match One Day International series in Belfast and four Twenty20 International matches in England which were scheduled to take place in May, have been pushed back amid this serious situation.

“We have a responsibility to protect the wellbeing of players, coaches, fans and the wider community, and will not hesitate to take a safety-first approach to our operations over coming months,” said Warren Deutrom, Chief Executive of Cricket Ireland.

“We would like to thank the Bangladesh Cricket Board for their helpful cooperation in reaching this decision, and we shall work with them at establishing new dates for the series when we are all in a position to plan for the future with greater certainty,” he added.

The United Kingdom, however, has been entering the second weekend of without a sporting event. Moreover, no professional cricket will take place in England and Wales before May 28 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pubs, restaurants and gyms around the country were closed on Friday as well to restrict the spread of the virus.

Coronavirus has affected not only everyone’s lives but also sporting events across the globe which not only included the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League but also many international series where no decision took place as the situation has not changed much in the last few days amid the novel coronavirus pandemic in the country as well as globally.

Earlier the BCCI has postponed the start date of the tournament from March 29 to April 15 as India currently reported nearly 400 positive cases and seven deaths for COVID-19 so far. While all the foreign visas have already been put on hold till April 15, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that a “truncated IPL” can take place where a minimum 17 days already lost.
