A lot of pundits had already predicted that Virat Kohli will be losing his ODI captaincy as well to Rohit Sharma after resigning as teh skipper from T20I and on Wednesday, the latter has been appointed as the ODI captain as well.  The reports of the Times of India suggest that the BCCI, gave 48 hours to Kohli for stepping down from ODI captaincy, and the board announced their decision at the 49th hour. Now, one can say, Kohli has been sacked from captaincy.

However, in their statement, BCCI didn’t even bother about addressing Virat being sacked as they informed that the selection committee has decided to name Rohit captain of the limited-overs squad going forward. That clearly means, Virat Kohli lost his captaincy, just like that.

The moment India witnessed a horrifying exit from the T20 World Cup 2021, Kohli’s leadership fate was sealed but the BCCI should’ve given an honorable exit to one of their successful captains in limited-overs cricket. In the end, it seems Kohli dared the BCCI to remove him from captaincy, and the BCCI took the decision and left the veteran player with no other option. 

Captaincy record of Virat Kohli in ODIs and T20Is

Virat Kohli started his captaincy under ever-so-cool MS Dhoni, who felt Virat should get at least two years to prepare for a World Cup. Menawhile, Kohli became a powerful captain and then came a time when the traditional administrators came back to the fore with a very powerful secretary and a president, who knows a thing about being a successful captain himself.

Even India had Kohli as Test and Dhoni as ODI and T20I captain for a couple of years. But all those who follow Indian cricket closely shouldn’t be surprised with the latest turn of events. Kohli is an articulate man but closer home among his folks, one has always heard rumblings about Virat not being a players’ man.

While former head coach Ravi Shastri, in recent interviews, has suggested that it will be better for Virat Kohli if he concentrates more on his batting.  Some of the reprots also suggestd that Kohli became a detached personality once he was handed leadership and over the years, most of the juniors found an elder brother who offered a “reassuring arm around their shoulder” in Rohit.

It will be a new start for Virat Kohli and one needs to see how he adapts to the change where he is no longer the leader of the team. He will still be leading the Test squad.
