Suresh Raina created a new record in the IPL on this day in 2013 when he became the first batsman to have the scores of 98, 99 and 100. The brilliant knock of 99 by Suresh Raina helped the leaders Chennai Super Kings defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 77 runs in the 54th match of the Indian Premier League.

Earlier, Hyderabad captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat first. batting first Chennai bulldozed the Hyderabadi bowling line-up and piled up a massive score of 223 in the first innings. Chennai then managed to defend the high total with ease as they stopped the hosts for just 146/8.

Australian legend Mike Hussey was in an equally punishing mood as both the left-handers added a whopping 133 runs in just 12 overs. Suresh Raina felt agonizingly short of reaching his well-deserved century though. He needed five runs of the final ball to complete his century, Raina hit the cover-drive for a boundary to finally settle on 99 off 52 balls with 11 fours and three sixes.

Hussey scored his fifth half-century of the season with 67 off 42 balls with five boundaries and four sixes. The duo punished the SRH bowlers. Ishant Sharma conceded 0/66 in four overs which were the worst figures by a bowler in the history of IPL eclipsing the joint record held by Ashoke Dinda and Varun Aaron (0/63 in 4 overs). Such was the dominance of the Raina-Hussey duo that Dale Steyn (0/17 in 4 overs) deserved kudos for being the only bowler who was able to hold his own.

The Sunrisers reply started on a poor note when their opener Shikhar Dhawan was run out for three in the second over. They failed to recover from the big early blow and kept losing the wickets at regular intervals to slump to 64/5 in the ninth over. SRH ended up at 146/7, falling 77 runs short of the target. Suresh Raina was named as the Man of the Match.
