In a significant development in the long-standing legal battle between Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and his estranged wife Hasin Jahan, the Calcutta High Court has ordered Shami to pay a revised maintenance amount of ₹4 lakh per month—₹1.30 lakh for his wife and ₹2.70 lakh for their daughter. This marks a substantial increase from the ₹1.30 lakh monthly sum that had been previously set by a district sessions court in 2023.

The judgment quickly became a trending topic on social media, with many fans expressing sympathy for Shami, arguing that the revised figure was unreasonably high. However, the High Court clarified that the decision was based on Shami’s substantial earnings, the standard of living previously enjoyed by Jahan, and the future needs of their daughter.

“The husband’s income and financial disclosures make it clear that he is capable of providing better support,” the court stated. “The petitioner wife, who remains unmarried and lives independently with the child, is entitled to maintain the standard she enjoyed during the marriage. The aim is to reasonably secure her and the child’s future.”

The court further noted that while excessive monetary relief is not appropriate, awarding a minimal amount would also be unjust. The decision attempts to strike a balance between fairness and necessity.

Reacting to the verdict, Hasin Jahan expressed gratitude to the judiciary, noting that the increased amount would finally allow her to provide better educational opportunities for their daughter. “For the last seven years, I have lost almost everything fighting for my rights. I couldn’t afford to admit my daughter into a good school. I’m thankful to the court,” she told The Times of India.

Originally, Jahan had requested a monthly interim relief of ₹10 lakh—₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for her daughter.

The legal feud dates back to March 2018, when Jahan filed an FIR at the Jadavpur police station, accusing Shami and his family of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and financial neglect under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She even alleged match-fixing, further intensifying the controversy.

While the legal proceedings continue, the High Court’s latest decision underscores the seriousness with which the judiciary views spousal and child maintenance in high-profile cases.
