In the last decade or so, the fame of the shortest format cricketers has been increasing each passing year and the increase in the number of leagues around the world have shifted the focus of the fans who love to watch the 40 overs of action instead of spending a whole day waiting for the result. Moreover, the cricketers like Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum have produced a great testimony of the way in which the T20 cricket needs to be played. The former, however, has been termed as the best player in the format ever since it has come into the limelight.

Gayle is enjoying his off the field time

Team India lifted the World Cup 2007 in the inaugural edition of the tournament which probably was the best thing to happen to the format. The popularity increased in the country which also led to the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) the very next year to take it to the next level. As it stands now, almost every Test playing nation has its own T20 league and even the T20 specialist players are earning loads of money only by playing in the leagues all-over the world.

Chris Gayle, while speaking to Delhi Times, has claimed him to be the greatest T20 cricketer ever. He said, “Don’t remember the things that you have done in the other two formats.’ But now that I think about it, they say Chris Gayle is the best T20 player ever. That’s what they say, right? There is no debate in T20 cricket about who is the best player. There is a debate in Test cricket and ODI cricket. That’s why I’m the Universe Boss, I’m the greatest!”

In a way, Gayle’s claims seem fair as he has proved his worth time and again with his batting. 175 is the highest score in the format and it has been notched up by none other than the Jamaica-born cricketer and moreover, his strike rate of close to 150 after playing a whopping 336 T20 matches with more than 10,000 runs which justifies that he is the greatest player in the format.
