Exactly 11 years ago, Matthew Hayden scored his seventh ODI century, his third against New Zealand. Having lost the first two matches of the three-match ODI series, Michael Hussey, the then Australian captain, had won the toss and chose to bat at Hamilton.

Hayden went all out against the Kiwi bowlers from the word go. He completed his century in the 37th over with a single to long-off against Daryl Tuffey. He ended up scoring a career-best 181 (166) with the help of 11 fours and 10 sixes as Australia scored 346-5 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 10-0-70-2, Jeetan Patel was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers.

In what had been the trend throughout the series, New Zealand’s batsmen chased the target in what was an exciting finish. On the back of Craig McMillan’s third ODI century and career-best 117 (96) with the help of 13 fours and five sixes, New Zealand scored 350-9 in 49.3 overs. With bowling figures of 10-0-81-3, Mitchell Johnson was the pick of the Australian bowlers.

Hayden was adjourned the ‘Man of the Match‘ for his gargantuan innings.
