Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has said it was unnecessary by Mohammed Siraj to shush batsmen after taking wickets during the Nottingham Test against England. Karthik felt he had already won the battle and it wasn’t required to do the antics.

Mohammed Siraj is known for his aggressive demeanour since making his Test debut in Australia. Everyone loved his way of bowling and attitude but Karthik found his antics against Jonny Bairstow unnecessary and felt he shouldn’t have done that.

Siraj gave Bairstow a send-off by putting his finger on his lip after dismissing him in the second innings.

“I do feel it was unnecessary for Siraj to shush batsmen after dismissing them. You have already won the battle, why resort to this? That’s one learning for Siraj early in his international career,” Karthik wrote in The Telegraph.

“How many of us would have imagined Virat Kohli stepping in to calm an excitable team-mate down? Much to everyone’s amusement, the mercurial Indian captain was forced to act swiftly at Trent Bridge to ensure Mohammed Siraj didn’t cross the line.”

Karthik, who is in England as a commentator, admits he is loving the attitude of Indian cricketers, who aren’t afraid of engaging opponents in verbal duals.

“I love the brand of cricket portrayed by this team. Players are unafraid to engage their opponents in verbals, like Siraj and KL Rahul did. This is new-age India, armed with the license to bring out its personality,” he added.

Meanwhile, he also praised the multi-demeanour players of the Indian side. While Virat Kohli and Siraj are known for their aggressive approach, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane keep a calm head on their shoulder.

“Aggression manifests itself in different ways. For some like Virat, Siraj and Rahul, it could be open and in-your-face. I can’t see senior batsmen Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane singing that tune, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t aggressive,” concluded Karthik.
