South Africa has already lost the three-match Test series against India with one match still to go. The last Test will be played in Ranchi starting on 19th October 2019. With everything going against the visitors, their skipper, Faf du Plessis has decided to execute a unique idea in Ranchi that might help them change their fate on Indian soil.
This year is turning out to be a tough one for Proteas. As after losing a Test series earlier against Sri Lanka by 2-0, which was followed by their unsuccessful stint in ICC World Cup where they ended in 7th position. But, in order to come back on winning track, Faf might send a substitute tosser in Ranchi Test. According to the reports on Cricbuzz, he revealed this in a pre-match press conference on Thursday
Du Plessis has lost 9 consecutive tosses in Asia. In order to break the momentum, a new tactic will be used in Ranchi Test starting Saturday at the JSCA International Complex Stadium. This is not the first time, he opted for such a strategy. Back, in 2018, he sent his mate JP Duminy for the toss against Zimbabwe in his quest to bring it in his team’s favor. And in that match, the tactic gave a resounding success to him where they ended the match on the winning team as well.
As per the rules ahead of the game, skippers from both the teams come out to the center for the toss. The team who wins it gets the option to select batting or bowling. It sometimes plays a crucial role in winning or losing the game.
This tactic was also opted by Australian women’s skipper Meg Lanning against Sri Lanka in the recent T20I series. She brought a substitute coin flipper Alyssa Healy to do the honors. Incredibly, Healy won the toss and a smiling Lanning, who was standing right next to her, decided to bat. In the end, they defeated Islanders winning the T20I contest in an easy manner.
South African skipper Du Plessis also pointed out that the performance of batsmen and has asked them to step up and perform well against the hosts in the final encounter for this series.
