Hardik Pandya became the 289th cricketer to represent India in Test cricket. Having made his ODI and T20I debut last year, his test debut was always on the cards. It was difficult to keep someone of his abilities – an attacking batsman, a genuine fast bowler and acrobatic on the field, without a test cap. Moreover, India was in need of such a player.

Originally stated to bat at No. 6, Pandya had to wait for his turn to bat as he was sent in at No. 8, after Ravichandran Ashwin and Hardik Pandya. The situation of this match was comparatively comforting for any incoming batsmen. This is what Pandya made full use of.

He ended up scoring 50 (49) with the help of five fours and three sixes and was the last Indian batsman to be dismissed. Pandya played his natural game and not even for a moment did he look nervous on the big stage. Irrespective of how many ODIs, T20Is or IPL matches you play, a maiden test is always very special for any player. Having scored a half-century, Pandya’s confidence would be on the seventh heaven. He helped India to score 600.

He will be further waiting for his turn with the ball tomorrow morning. He has it in him to bowl some fine line and lengths.
