Former England fast bowler, Steve Harmison, had once hit the ball on the helmet of the then Australian skipper, Ricky Ponting, to the extent that the Aussie started bleeding and required medical attention on the ground.
This happened during the first Test match of the Ashes series in 2005. Ponting had won the toss and chose to bat at Lord’s. Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison were bowling a testing line and length, which saw them troubling the Australian openers in Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden.
On the last ball of the eighth over, Hoggard earned his first wicket in the form of Hayden (12). Harmison’s bouncer hit Ponting in the 11th over and the latter had to take the long walk back to the pavilion in the 13th over after he edged a Harmison delivery to Andrew Strauss.
