Former India opener turned veteran commentator Aakash Chopra has stated that Dinesh Karthik has almost started from where AB de Villiers has left off for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). However, Karthik smashed an unbeaten 66 off just 34 deliveries in last night’s match against the Delhi Capitals (DC). His stormy knock helped RCB post a massive total of 189/5 on the board, and they went on to win the match by 16 runs as well.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra added that Karthik’s efforts made sure that RCB won despite Du Plessis and Virat Kohli failing to contribute.
He said: “It seems AB de Villiers has gone and left his soul in Dinesh Karthik. Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli did not score runs but Bangalore still tasted victory. When they got to bat, wickets fell at regular intervals. Shardul Thakur dismisses Anuj Rawat, Faf du Plessis gets out. This is the sixth match and Virat Kohli has gotten run out twice. He is running non-existing runs. Maxwell batted like Maxi, he hit very well.”
Glenn Maxwell scored 55 runs off 34 balls after RCB were reduced to a score of 40/3 at one stage. He picked up Kuldeep Yadav to the cleaners in his first over, but the wrist-spinner bounced back to remove him as well. Aakash Chopra was impressed by Karthik, saying: “But after that, RCB was 92/5 at one stage. There Dinesh Karthik – what a player, what is this guy doing? He is rewinding the clock, age is just a number, he is class. He is reinventing the wheel every other day.”
He further explained: “AB de Villiers has given his superpowers to Dinesh Karthik. He took the team to 189. Shahbaz also played well. Kuldeep Yadav had to bowl the 20th over. The Delhi Capitals conceded 68 runs in three overs – Karthik hit four fours and two sixes in an over from Mustafizur, Glenn Maxwell hit 23 runs in Kuldeep’s first over and then again 17 runs were scored in his last over.”
Aakash Chopra also opined on the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) performance who are almost out of the playoff race for IPL 2022. They lost their last game by 18 runs on Saturday against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). This was their sixth consecutive loss as well.
“Mumbai Indians are still winless. They have not been able to win even one encounter, six encounters have already passed. This season is as good as over, you can still qualify by winning eight matches but if you didn’t win 1 out of the first 6, how will you win 8 out of 8. Bumrah was left alone. He is thinking what he should do. They need 5 Bumrahs, it will not work without that because whoever else they get to bowl other than him, he is laid threadbare. Tymal Mills has been sent a mile, he was hit so much,” he again shared.
Chopra also shared that Jaydev Unadkat was the only other positive in the Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack. He explained: “Jaydev Unadkat actually bowled very good overs – 17th and 20th overs. A semblance of a fight was seen that 199 were scored else 215 would have been scored. He bowled very well, but other than him, everyone was hit. Six bowlers were used in the first six overs – every over a new bowler but still they were getting hit.”
Although Jasprit Bumrah failed to pick up a wicket, he gave away just 24 runs in his four overs. While Unadkat finished with figures of 2/32, Tymal Mills conceded 54 runs in the three overs he bowled. Aakash Chopra also opened up on Rohit Sharma’s poor show.
He said, “The chase is not happening at all. Rohit Sharma got out once again, he has been repeatedly getting out. He is struggling for runs, not for form. It has been six matches now and he has not scored a single half-century. He looks like playing well in every match but gets out. Ishan Kishan also gets out, he is also struggling. Dewald Brevis at least did the baby AB job. He played some solid shots, such a powerful 19-year-old kid. Suryakumar Yadav played well once again. Tilak Varma tried but after that, wickets at regular intervals. It was only a formality at the end, where Jaydev Unadkat and Murugan Ashwin were hitting but Kieron Pollard couldn’t play the big shots.”
Aakash Chopra has also applauded KL Rahul’s match-winning century in Saturday afternoon’s IPL 2022 match between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Mumbai Indians (MI). Rahul smashed an unbeaten 103 off just 60 balls as LSG scored 199/4 in 20 overs. Their bowlers then restricted Mumbai within 181/9 to win the encounter by 18 runs.
He stated, “KL Rahul – you have heard his name and seen his work, not once but repeatedly. He opens, stabilizes in the middle overs and does the finishing job as well. You can get all work done from him. He is an engineer, plumber, electrician, mechanic and driver as well. I feel he will even make the vaccine booster. Wonderful knock, such a beautiful knock, it was his 100th IPL match and he celebrated it with a hundred. He remained unbeaten till the end and how well he batted – incredible batting.”
“Quinton de Kock was the one to start fast but after that, he (Rahul) hit at a strike rate of 170. Who says he doesn’t run fast? He has hit another century, the third of his IPL career, his second against the Mumbai Indians and the second of this IPL – Buttler had scored one. This encounter was in his name only. Once again he just stamped his authority and his dominance. He is an amazing player. Form is temporary, KL Rahul is permanent, that’s what he did. He protected the Lucknow Super Giants’ innings at different stages of the game and took care of them,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
