Former India batter Aakash Chopra feels that Deepak Chahar could bowl in the death overs. Team India are currently facing a death-bowling issue, which has been amplified after Jasprit Bumrah’s back injury that ruled him out of the T20 World Cup 2022. Deepak Chahar is one of India’s finest bowlers with the new ball. His ability to swing the ball both ways made headlines for the last couple of years.

However, he has barely donned the role of bowling in the death overs when it comes to playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as for Team India too. When conditions favoured swing, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni often brought Chahar into the attack to complete his entire spell as well.

However, while talking about that, Chopra said on his YouTube channel: “The 19th over issue is turning out to be a real headache for India. I say give the 19th over to Deepak Chahar now, give him an opportunity, you never know he might end up bowling well. Now Bumrah is not there officially, so who will play? I strongly believe that there should be two replacements in the squad for Bumrah.”

Since the onset of the 2022 Asia Cup, the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah have all bowled the 19th over across several matches, but have failed to do well. However, he suggested that both Shami and Chahar should be named in the squad in place of Jasprit Bumrah.

Chopra said: “One of the replacements should have speed and that is Shami, the second one should be able to swing that being Chahar. There won’t be much help for spin there, you need a good pool of pacers.”

Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra has expressed his disappointment as Virat Kohli and KL Rahul has been rated for the third T20I against South Africa.

“I personally feel that why is there a need for rest when everything is going rather well? Practice will continue, whether it be net sessions or warm-up matches, but when there is an international match left, why not play it? Now Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will not be traveling with the team for the third T20I. Are there even enough batters in the squad to replace them in the playing XI? Iyer will be one, but who will be the other one? Virat Kohli came into the Asia Cup after a long break, there was a 12-day break before the Australia series as well. Now he will get another 15-day break,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
