During the second Test of India’s tour of New Zealand in 2014, Ishant Sharma had displayed a spectacular spell of bowling which saw him registering his fifth Test five-wicket haul and the then career-best best figures of 17-3-51-6.
Having lost the first Test at Auckland by 40 runs, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the then Indian captain, won the toss and chose to field at Wellington. In a bid to prove his captain’s decision right, Ishant picked up three top-order wickets in the form of Hamish Rutherford (13), Peter Fulton (12) and Tom Latham (0) before lunch on Day 1.
Post the lunch break, Dhoni started proceedings with Mohammad Shami and Zaheer Khan. He then replaced Shami with Ishant, who picked up the wicket of Corey Anderson (24) and BJ Watling (0) in the second and third over of his spell respectively.
He came back to dismiss Tim Southee (32) during the fag end of the innings. New Zealand could only score 192-10 in 52.5 overs in the first innings. Watch the full video:
