During the 33rd match of the 11th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Kolkata, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Shubman Gill scored his maiden IPL half-century in a match-winning knock.

After Dinesh Karthik put the visitors in to bat, Chennai Super Kings scored 177-5 in their allotted quota of 20 overs. Their innings was powered by starts from four of their batsmen. Had even one of them went on to play a substantial innings, they would have registered a match-winning total.

Gill was promoted up the order at No. 4. He came in to bat in the fifth over and took this opportunity with both his hands. In the following over, which was the last of the powerplay, Gill hit Shane Watson for three boundaries in the over. At the halfway mark, Gill had scored 18* (12) and was in the middle of a partnership with another rookie, Rinku Singh.

It appeared as if Dinesh Karthik’s entry in the middle acted as an additional boost for Gill, who played like a senior pro with his captain on the other end. One over which changed the match in the favour of the Knight Riders was KM Asif’s third over, in which Gill hit the bowler for two sixes.

With a couple of runs off Ravindra Jadeja in the 16th over, he completed his half-century on the first ball of the following over. Gill remained unbeaten till the end as he scored 57* (36) with the help of six fours and two sixes. Watch how Twitterati reacted on his maiden IPL half-century:
