England captain Jos Buttler has expressed his strong belief that having families accompany players on long tours is “really important” and beneficial, emphasizing that it does not interfere with cricket performance. His comments come after reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced restrictions on the presence of families during tours.

The BCCI’s new guidelines limit the duration families can accompany players, advising state boards to avoid providing special arrangements and to ensure players do not travel with their families on the same bus as the team. During a press conference ahead of England’s first T20I against India on Wednesday, Buttler was asked about the matter and responded with a touch of humour.

“That’s a loaded question, isn’t it?” he joked, before adding seriously, “I think it’s important. We live in a modern world, and having families on tour is great. It allows you to enjoy that experience, especially given the amount of cricket being played and the long periods players spend away from home.”

Buttler noted that, in the post-COVID era, the significance of having families around has been further highlighted. “I don’t think it affects the cricket too much. It’s something that is very manageable, and personally, I think it’s really important to share that time with your family to lighten the load of being away from home,” he said.

Under the new BCCI regulations, families are allowed to join players for no more than two weeks on tours exceeding 45 days. Any exceptions to this rule would need prior approval from head coach Gautam Gambhir.

While the issue has sparked conversations, Indian captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar recently held a press conference to announce the team for the ODIs against England and the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, they did not directly address the topic of family restrictions.

India’s next major tour is set for mid-February when they travel to the UAE for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Before that, they will face England in five T20Is and three ODIs at home, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the T20I side and Rohit Sharma captaining the ODI team. Gambhir will be coaching both formats.
