During India’s tour of South Africa in 1992, Kapil Dev came into the limelight after he had mankaded Peter Kirsten in the second ODI of the seven-match ODI series. The incident is still remembered for one of the strangest ways of getting a batsman out in cricket.
Having lost the first ODI at Cape Town by 6 wickets, Mohammad Azharduddin, the then Indian captain, won the toss and chose to bat in the second ODI at Port Elizabeth. His decision backfired as India ended up scoring 147-10 in 49.4 overs. Woorkeri Raman, who had opened the batting alongside Ajay Jadeja, top-scored for India with 33 (60) with the help of five fours. With bowling figures of 9.4-0-32-4, right-arm medium-fast bowler, Brian McMillan, was the pick of the South African bowlers.
Kapil Dev dismissed Andrew Hudson (5) in the third over to provide India with a favourable start. The match turned out to be a controversial one when Kapil Dev mankaded Kirsten (5) in the ninth over. Watch the full video:
