In what was India’s first T20I ever, wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik had played a match-winning innings to win the match for India. The match was played at Johannesburg during India’s tour of South Africa in 2006.
Having won the five-match ODI series 4-0, the then South African captain, Graeme Smith, had won the toss and chose to bat. A tight bowling performance by all the Indian bowlers saw South Africa scoring 126-9 in their allotted quota of 20 overs.
Albie Morkel, who came in to bat at No. 6, was the highest run-scorer for the hosts as he scored 27 (18) with the help of a four and three sixes. With bowling figures of 2.3-1-10-2, Ajit Agarkar was the pick of the Indian bowlers.
India chased the target on the penultimate delivery of the match. Captain Virender Sehwag (34) and Dinesh Mongia (38) were the main contributors. Karthik, who remained unbeaten till the end, scored 31* (28) with the help of three fours & a six.
