In what can be seen as a disastrous start to their innings against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) star batsman Nitish Rana was involved in a terrible mix-up with teammate Shubman Gill and eventually the former had to go back to the pavilion.

After registering a crucial win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their previous fixture, Under the captaincy of Dinesh Karthik, KKR locked horns with KXIP in Abu Dhabi. Karthik won the toss and decided to bat first against the Punjab heavyweights. In only the third over, KKR were handed a setback by pace ace Mohammed Shami, who removed star batsman Rahul Tripathi for cheap.

At a time when KKR fans expected experienced campaigner Rana to go big at after losing the early wicket of Rahul Tripathi, the Kolkata giants suffered a comical run-out and KKR was reduced to 15-2 after 4 overs. Facing pacer Arshdeep Singh of KXIP in the 4th over, Gill clipped the third ball towards the fielder stationed at the short fine leg.

Though Rana was eyeing a quick single, Gill failed to acknowledge the call from his partner as his late call created a run-out opportunity for the Punjab side. Punjab fielder Nicholas Pooran made a darting run to remove the bails in order to confirm Rana’s dismissal.

Talking about the match, KKR was off to a shaky start as they only managed to reach the tally of 60 in the first 10 overs. After Rana’s wicket, Eoin Morgan joined Gill at the crease and the duo revived KRR innings before the England star batsman was sent packing by Ravi Bishnoi in the 12th over.
