During the first T20I of New Zealand’s tour of Sri Lanka in 2009 at Colombo, Jacob Oram grabbed a hat-trick, thus becoming only the second bowler (after Brett Lee) to do so in T20Is. However, his feat remained unnoticed as it came on the last delivery of his third and the first two deliveries of his fourth over.
Daniel Vettori, the then New Zealand skipper, had won the toss and chose to bat. Some disciplined bowling from the home team saw New Zealand scoring 141-8 in 20 overs. Ross Taylor had top-scored with 60 (45) with the help of five fours and a six. Lasith Malinga (4-0-21-2) was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers.
Sri Lanka, too, faced the wrath of wickets falling at regular intervals so much so that they ended up losing the match by 3 runs. Much of it happened due to Oram’s spell which read 4-0-33-3. Tillakaratne Dilshan top-scored with 57 (28) with the help of eight fours and a six, but, received no support whatsoever from the other end.
