Exactly seven years ago, during the second semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, India beat Pakistan by 29 runs at Mohali to enter the semi-final of the tournament. It was the fifth time that India and Pakistan faced each other in the Cricket World Cup, India winning on all occasions.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the then Indian captain, had won the toss and chose to bat. As had been the trend throughout the tournament, Virender Sehwag started the proceedings for India by scoring a boundary. Within no time, he scored eight more boundaries as India were off to a brisk start.

Having lost Sehwag (38), India had scored 73-1 in the first 10 overs. At the halfway mark, they had reached 141-2. But havoc struck India in the following over as Wahab Riaz dismissed Virat Kohli (9) and Yuvraj Singh (0) on successive deliveries. Having received several lives, Sachin Tendulkar had completed his half-century and the mantle of taking India to a respectable total was now on him and the captain Dhoni.

India lost Tendulkar (85) to Shahid Afridi in the 37th over. Soon, captain Dhoni’s scratchy innings had also come to an end. Suresh Raina (36*) hung with the lower order to take India to 260-9 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 10-0-46-5, Wahab Riaz was the pick of the Pakistani bowlers.

A positive start by Pakistan was hampered in the ninth over when Zaheer Khan dismissed Kamran Akmal (19). At the halfway mark, Pakistan had reached 106-3. Requiring 155 runs from the next 25 overs, the match hung in balance of both the teams. However, slow run rate and continuous fall of wickets saw Pakistan losing track of the chase.

Pakistan eventually got bundled out for 231 in 49.5 overs. Misbah-ul-Haq, who came out to bat at No. 5, top-scored with 56 (76). His innings comprised of five fours and a six. With bowling figures of 10-0-33-2, Ashish Nehra was the pick of the Indian bowlers.
