Veteran South Africa batsman Quinton de Kock has returned to the ODI squad after his retirement from the longer format. And South Africa limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma said that the wicketkeeper-batsman will have a point to prove in the ODI series as well. Notably, South Africa has registered a convincing win by 2-1 in the Test series against India.

“It is good to see him again. We obviously missed him in the Test team but he has made his decision to retire from the longest format. We respect his decision, having him back has been good. Quinton will have a point to prove andSouth Africa I am sure he is also as excited as we are to see him in the team,” Temba Bavuma told reporters in the virtual presser.

“Marco Jansen has been drafted into the ODI squad, the world has been what cricketing abilities he has. It was a no-brainer to get him into the ODI squad. The Indian outfit is a strong white-ball squad. We will give them the respect we do to any other team. We do not expect this series to be easier, we know it will be tough. We will be preparing as well as we can,” he further added.

However, Bavuma also said that they are in doubt over whether to select a specialist batsman or all-rounder for the number six position for the first ODI against India on Wednesday. Bavuma believes that the side can take momentum into the ODIs from the surprise 2-1 test series win over the Indians. The first two matches of the ODI series will take place at Boland Park on Wednesday and Friday, before the final match in Cape Town on Sunday as well.

“As a captain you want as many resources as you can,” Temba Bavuma again stated. “You have to accept that probably one bowler on the day won’t hit his straps. “I would like to have as many options as I can, taking into account the balance of the team.”

“It is a different format that involves a different skillset, but from a momentum and confidence point of view, we will be leaning on that to help inspire the other new guys to get us through the challenges and pressure we will be facing in the next three games,” Temba Bavuma concluded.
