Rohit Sharma silenced his doubters in style with a vintage knock against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede on Sunday, April 20. The Mumbai crowd was treated to a masterclass as Rohit rolled back the years, guiding Mumbai Indians to a comprehensive victory in what was billed as the ‘El Clasico’ of the IPL.

The celebration in the Mumbai Indians dressing room said it all. The team, elated after securing their third consecutive win of the season, rallied around their former captain, who had been under scrutiny for a string of low scores. Leading the praise was Mumbai Indians’ global head of performance, Mahela Jayawardene, who dubbed Rohit “Maverick” and even gifted him a pair of sunglasses as a token of admiration.
Mahela Jayawardene, himself a veteran of the highs and lows of elite-level cricket, empathised with Rohit’s recent form struggles. “I’ve been through that – the rough patches, the doubts, the demons. It’s not easy. But Ro, you dug deep and showed your class tonight. Maverick – brilliant,” Jayawardene said in a post-match huddle shared by the franchise.

Until this game, Rohit had managed just 82 runs from six matches, failing to cross 30 even once. MI used him as an Impact Player at times, but his form remained a concern. That changed dramatically against CSK, as Rohit unleashed a stroke-filled 76* off 45 balls, powering MI’s chase of 177.
He got off the blocks quickly, attacking CSK’s pace duo of Khaleel Ahmed and Jamie Overton during the powerplay. Partnering first with Ryan Rickelton (63-run opening stand) and then Suryakumar Yadav, who was at his explosive best with a 30-ball 68, Rohit controlled the chase with precision and intent. The duo stitched an unbeaten 113-run stand, taking MI home with 15.2 overs.

What stood out was Rohit’s ability to blend aggression with composure. He picked his moments against spin and kept the scoreboard moving without unnecessary risks.
Jayawardene also acknowledged the quiet support system behind Rohit’s resurgence. “With players of his experience, you don’t overcoach them. Polly (Pollard) and I kept the communication open and positive. He knew what was required – it was just about getting through those first few overs and settling in.”

Despite the lean patch, MI’s management showed unwavering trust. “His intent never wavered. Even when runs didn’t come, he played for the team. That’s what we admire about him,” Jayawardene added.
With confidence restored and momentum on their side, Mumbai Indians will now shift focus to their next challenge – a high-octane clash against SunRisers Hyderabad in their backyard on April 23. If Rohit continues in this vein, MI’s playoff push will only gain more traction.
