During the fourth match of the Pepsi Independence Cup at Mumbai in 1997, Sanath Jayasuriya single-handedly won the match for Sri Lanka against India. Sachin Tendulkar, the then Indian captain, had won the toss and chose to bat.
India were reduced to 3-29 by the Sri Lankans as Sourav Ganguly (0), Tendulkar (2) and Vinod Kambli (4) were dismissed cheaply. Half-centuries from Rahul Dravid (61), Ajay Jadeja (72) and Robin Singh (51) enabled India to post a decent 225-7 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 10-0-59-3, Sajeewa de Silva was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers.
Sri Lanka won the match by 5 wickets with 59 balls to spare all because of Sanath Jayasuriya’s fourth ODI century, 151* (120), with the help of 17 fours and four sixes. For India, Abey Kuruvilla and Anil Kumble picked up a couple of wickets each.
