On Saturday, May 14, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer clarified his comments about the CEO’s role in team selection matters. However, his comments made headlines after their previous IPL 2022 match on Monday as well. Iyer, who was addressing the post-match ceremony after leading KKR to a 54-run win over SunRIsers Hyderabad at the MCA Stadium in Pune, said that he wanted to clarify his comments to the broadcaster Murali Karthik.

“And also I want to clarify from the last interview when I took the CEO’s name, I meant he’s there to console the players who are sitting out, it’s never easy for them,” Iyer said after Saturday’s one-sided contest.

Shreyas Iyer and KKR had faced criticism on social media after the KKR captain said on Monday that the CEO is also involved in team selection when he was asked about the constant chopping and changing in the playing XI.

“It’s really difficult. I was also in that position once when I started playing IPL. We discuss with the coaches, CEO is also involved in team selection. Baz (head coach Brendon McCullum) goes to the players and tells them if they are not playing. All of them are very supportive of the decision-making,” Shreyas Iyer had said on Monday.

Meanwhile, his comments about the CEO’s role helped raise quite a few eyebrows too as well. Meanwhile, former India fast bowler Madan Lal was among the many who was surprised by this.

“I am personally shocked and dismayed by Iyer’s revelations. If that’s true then what are coaches and support staff doing? It is the job of coaches and captains to decide on the team and not the CEO. Something is fundamentally wrong within the team,” Madan Lal had said during an interaction organised by Indian Sports Fans as well.
