Srinath’s outburst with the new ball

Former Indian legendary fast bowler, Javagal Srinath, was known for his ability to swing the new ball. His opening spell against Sri Lanka in the first semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 1996 at Kolkata is one of his great spells.

Mohammad Azharuddin, the then India captain, had won the toss and chose to bowl. In such an important game, Srinath dismissed Sri Lanka’s dangerous opening pair of Romesh Kaluwitharana (0) and Sanath Jayasuriya (1) in the first over itself.

He further dented the Sri Lankan progress by dismissing Asanka Gurusinha (1). On the back of half-centuries from Aravinda de Silva (66) and Roshan Mahanama (58), Sri Lanka ended up scoring 251-8 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 7-1-34-3, Srinath was the pick of the bowlers for India. Watch the full video:
