  • Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged fans and experts to remain patient with teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has taken the IPL 2025 by storm. At just 14 years of age, Suryavanshi has already etched his name into history as the youngest player to debut in the IPL and, more impressively, as the youngest centurion in T20 cricket. His blistering century against the Gujarat Titans—scored off just 35 balls, has left the cricketing world stunned, with many touting him as a future star for Team India.

However, Gavaskar has sounded a note of caution. Speaking to Sports Today, the former India captain emphasised the importance of not rushing Suryavanshi into the national setup based on a single breakthrough season. Instead, he urged everyone to observe how the youngster fares in the seasons ahead, especially with how opponents adapt to him.

“In any sport, when you’re a newcomer, you’re an unknown commodity,” Sunil Gavaskar explained. “The real test is the second season, when bowlers and support staff have studied your strengths and worked out plans to counter you. We’ve seen several big hitters from last season struggle this year due to that very reason.”

Sunil Gavaskar added that while Suryavanshi’s debut campaign has been nothing short of sensational, the journey ahead will require maturity, composure, and a strong support system to navigate the pressure and expectations that come with early success.

“He’s had a phenomenal start—scoring a century at 14 with 11 sixes and 7 fours in a T20 match is remarkable,” Sunil Gavaskar said. “But talent alone isn’t enough at the highest level. It’s about how he manages the attention, the pressure, and the expectations that will now follow him.”

Gavaskar also suggested that Suryavanshi should be given time to grow, including exposure to red-ball cricket and domestic tournaments, before being seriously considered for international duties.

While the hype is real, Gavaskar’s reminder is timely: Indian cricket has seen many young prodigies come and go. For Suryavanshi to become a lasting figure, patience, preparation, and perspective will be key.
