New Zealand pacer Tim Southee on Tuesday defended India captain Virat Kohli for his outburst during the course of the recently-concluded second Test in Christchurch, citing that the India captain is a “very passionate guy” who tries to “bring out the best in himself”. Kohli allegedly did swear at Kane Williamson during the animated celebrations after New Zealand captain got out on day two of the second Test. However, India eventually lost the game by seven wickets and lost the series by 0-2 as well.

“He’s a very passionate guy… and very energetic in the field. He tries to bring out the best in himself,” Southee, who has played alongside Kohli in the IPL, told ‘Radio New Zealand’.

Tim Southee said both India and New Zealand played well and also competed hard in the series but there were no issues in between them. Following the defeat on Monday, one of the local journalists had asked about Kohli’s reaction on the incident and that did not go down well with the captain. However, Virat Kohli gave a fitting reply to the reporter in the post-match presentation.

“What do you think? I am asking you the answer,” Kohli hit back at the scribe. “You need to find out an answer and come up with a better question. You can’t come here with half questions and half details of what happened.”

“Also if you want to create controversy, this is not the right place. I spoke with the match referee (Madugalle) and he had no issues with what happened,” Virat Kohli had said.

India captain Virat Kohli on Monday admitted that they were “completely outplayed” by New Zealand in the two-Test series. The Indian batting totally crumbled under the pressure in the two-Test series and the skipper said that having a packed schedule, the team management will have to find solutions of this.
