Team India batting coach Vikram Rathour has said that a 250 plus score in the first innings will be a good one considering the conditions as he believes it will put India in a fighting position against a strong side like New Zealand in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final in Southampton.

“We would like to score as many runs as possible but 250 plus will be a reasonable score in these conditions,” Rathour said at the day end press conference.

India managed to post 146 for 3 on Day 2 when the umpires called off the play for the bad lights. At the stumps, India captain Virat Kohli was batting on 44 along with the vice-captain, Ajinkya Rahane 29.

However, the batting coach also praised openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma for playing the new ball quite well while facing a strong pace attack of the Kiwis and put up 62 runs as well. After that, Rohit got out. While talking about this, Vikram Rathour said, “Batting is about scoring runs. Rohit and Gill showed a lot of intent and looked to score wherever they can. Hats off to Virat and Rahane for the manner in which they batted but a lot of credit should also got to the openers.”

However, he also opened up about the claims that Cheteshwar Pujara is facing some technical problems as he has not been in good form and also has been hit at least four times on the helmet in Test matches recently as well.

“We are not really concerned and he is a good player. I don’t think pace is an issue with him. Till he batted, he looked solid and he has a role to play in the team. Today also, he played 50 odd balls. He just needs to convert those starts. It”s going to happen very soon,” Vikram Rathour signed off.
