After the first ODI of the three-match series getting washed out in Guyana, Team India was expecting some game in Trinidad against West India. However, the thing to notice in the game was that the Indian skipper, Virat Kohli carried his form and notched up a brilliant century Port of Spain in Trinidad & Tobago.

Opting to bat, India found themselves in trouble after the early dismissal of Shikhar Dhawan (2) in the very first over of the innings. Eager to build India’s innings, Kohli walked out in the middle to partner Rohit Sharma. While the latter took his own sweet time (11 balls) to get off the mark, Kohli was quick to be in the business as he kept on scoring exquisite boundaries and adequately rotating the strike.

In the fifth over, the Indian skipper opened the face of his bat to run it down to third man for an easy single which saw him etching his name in the history books, yet again. In what seemed like an ordinary single, Virat raced to 19 runs which allowed him to shatter the 26-year-old record of Javed Miandad to become the highest run-scorer against the Windies in ODI history.

Miandad was earlier leading the elite list with 1,930 runs (33.85 average) to his name against the Windies in 64 ODIs. But, Miandad’s long-standing record was finally broken by Virat who took nearly half number of innings (34 ODIs) and more than double of his average (71.66) to surpass him.

Kohli continued to play his beautiful strokes and notched up his 42nd ODI ton. He also stitched a crucial 74-run partnership for the second wicket before Rohit followed by a 125-run stand with Shreyas Iyer (71). With the help of these knocks, India managed to reach a total of 279/7 in their quota of 50 overs.

Virat Kohli scored a ton in Port of Spain

During his century, Kohli became the eighth highest run-getter in ODIs. He went past Sourav Ganguly’s tally of 11,363 runs in this innings to take eighth position. Now only Sachin Tendulkar sits above him among Indian batsmen on the list.

Here are some of the other records Virat broke during the century:

  • Kohli has now scored 8 centuries against West Indies in ODIs. Only Sachin Tendulkar has more hundreds against a single opposition, which is nine against Australia.
  • Kohli has taken just 34 innings to complete 2000 ODI runs against West Indies. The previous record was 37 innings by Rohit Sharma against Australia.
  • Kohli’s average against West Indies 72.57, the best among all batsmen with 1500-plus runs against a single opposition.
  • Kohli scored an ODI ton after 11 innings. The last time he went more innings in a row without a century was 13 innings in 2015, which had also spanned through the World Cup.
