Former India opener Wasim Jaffer said that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Kane Williamson has made a few tactical errors against the Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, SRH lost by 61 runs against RR in their IPL 2022 campaign opener on Tuesday, 29 March. Jaffer also suggested that while Williamson is a proven leader, he missed a trick in the team’s first match as the veteran believes Aiden Markram should have come in to bat ahead of Nicholas Pooran.
Pooran, who batted at number 3, had a poor show and he was dismissed for a duck. Markram, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 57 and was the top scorer with the bat for SRH in the game as well. Apart from Markran, Washington Sundar also scored 40 runs down the order off just 14 deliveries. And, Jaffer reckoned that the SRH think tank should look to promote them in the batting order. He believes the team won’t benefit much from Sundar batting at number 8 as well.
Jaffer said while speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 time out live: “I felt Kane Williamson got a lot of things wrong tactically and it is a very surprising thing to say as he is such a good captain. Aiden Markram could have batted ahead of Nicolas Pooran and Pooran could have come at number 5. Washington Sundar batting at number 8, he could also have been pushed up the order. You need to get these things right. But it is better for them to go wrong in the initial games rather than in later ones.”
“Very disappointing for SRH. They won the toss, but this is the first time that we have seen a team batting first win a game in IPL 2022. A very forgetful game for them as everything went wrong. From bowling in the powerplay, to bowling in middle-overs, and batting too. They lost the game in the powerplay itself while batting,” Wasim Jaffer concluded.
They will next be seen in action on Monday, April 4 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the DY Patil Stadium in their second match of IPL 2022. And, according to him, Sundar should also be given the ball in the powerplay as he has done that for the RCB before.
Jaffer said: “Washington Sundar surely has to bat above number 8. I don’t think you are achieving anything from him by making him bat there. He needs to bowl a couple of overs in the powerplay and has to bat at 6 or 7. If needed, you can also promote him to number 3 or 4. That short little innings would have given him a lot of confidence. Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult gave a masterclass on how the SRH bowlers needed to bowl. They needed to bowl at the top of the off, hitting the hard length as there was enough help off the pitch. But the Hyderabad bowlers couldn’t do that. Washington Sundar didn’t bowl much in the powerplay, which he normally does. They need to reshuffle and get that combination right”
“Nicholas Pooran needed to play out the powerplay and could have played out Trent Boult as well because he was bowling his 3rd over. He could have waited for Nathan Coulter-Nile or the spinners. But I don’t think the took the right option. It’s okay to get out on zero, but the shot he tired is questionable,” Wasim Jaffer concluded.
