After a 45-match group stage of ICC World Cup 2019, the Indian team reached the semi-final with 15 points in nine matches which helped them to finish at the top of the points table. With just one loss and a washout, the ‘Men in Blue’ were hot favorites to lift the coveted trophy.

Their dominance in the tournament continued in the first semifinal against New Zealand when the Indian bowlers restricted Kane Williamson and his men for 239/8 in their quota of 50 overs. Despite the wicket expected to be a bit slower, a total of 239 runs couldn’t’ve been taken lightly by the Indian team. Eventually, what unfolded at the Old Trafford stadium left everyone (mainly Indian fans) absolutely stunned.

Beginning their run-chase, India suffered a huge blow after their in-form opener Rohit Sharma (1) was sent back to the pavilion in the second over of Matt Henry. A forced a faint edge off Rohit’s bat before going straight into the hands of Tom Latham behind the stumps.

If Rohit’s early dismissal had India in a spot of bother, skipper Virat Kohli’s dismissal in the very next over gave them a huge scare. On the fourth delivery of the third over, Trent Boult found Kohli plumb right in front of the stumps. Virat took the DRS which was eventually nullified with the ball tracker returning umpire’s call on the leg stump.

In the next over, New Zealand’s pace attack continued troubling the Indian team as Henry dismissed KL Rahul (1), who joined Rohit and Virat back into the hut in the 4th over of the chase.

For a team that was busy cutting a sorry figure for their opponents in the group stage, the high-flying Indian team was made to look mediocre at an unbelievable score of 5/3 in 3.1 overs. Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik (6) tried to stabilize the innings for the reeling Indian team, but a phenomenal catch by Jimmy Neesham sent the latter packing as Henry claimed his third scalp of the match.

The unbelievable turn of events in Manchester, especially the early dismissals of Rohit and Virat, sent social media into a major meltdown as Indian fans mourned their losses and hoped for a miracle in what has been a roller-coaster of a semifinal so far. Eventually, India lost the game by 18 runs despite a mind-boggling fifties by Ravindra Jadeja (77) and MS Dhoni (50). Here are some of the tweets:
