Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes Shubhman Gill has the temperament to become a great player in future. Gill was instrumental in giving India a good start on the second day of the World Test Championship Final against New Zealand in Southampton.

After Kane Williamson won the toss and asked India to bat first, Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill played cautiously to give their team a good start. Both players were looking solid and played confidence during their 62-run opening stand.

Seeing Gill batting well, Gavaskar lavished praises on him from the commentary box and said “He has the temperament to become a great player.”

While Gill is yet to score a Test century, he scored 91 in India’s second innings at the Gabba during the fourth Test against Australia earlier this year. The innings was instrumental in India recording a historic win at the venue and thus sealing victory in the series.

Gavaskar further added, “The first hundred is always the toughest one because that journey from scoring a half-century to reaching three figures is not that easy. Batsmen tend to feel settled somewhere around 70-80 run mark and start taking the bowlers on and lose their wicket in that way. He just needs to get his first hundred and then a lot more will follow.”

Virat Kohli stuck to the same playing XI which he revealed on the eve of the final. Meanwhile, Williamson played an all-seam attack with Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson and Neil Wagner playing together along with Colin de Grandhomme.

Rohit got dismissed off 34 by Jamieson and Gill also got out just after him. Neil Wagner removed the latter in his first over to rattle India’s innings just before the lunch break.
