Exactly 14 years ago, Chris Gayle scored his eight ODI century against South Africa at Johannesburg. He hit the century during the fifth ODI of West Indies’ tour of South Africa in 2004.

Having won the last ODI by 7 wickets at Centurion, Brian Lara, the then West Indian captain, had won the toss and chose to bat. Gayle scored an unbeaten 152 (153) with the help of 12 fours and three sixes as West Indies scored 304-2 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 8-0-42-1, Lance Klusener was the pick of the South African bowlers.

Despite Gayle’s herculean innings, West Indies ended up losing the match by 4 wickets and the series 1-3. For South Africa, Jacques Kallis had scored his 12th Test century, 139 (142), with the help of 11 fours and three sixes. With bowling figures of 10-2-56-2, Ravi Rampaul was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies.
