During the second ODI of Australia’s tour of India in 2001 at Pune, Hemang Badani had scored his maiden ODI hundred. Having won the first ODI at Bangalore by 60 runs, the then Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, had won the toss and chose to bat yet again.

India were in a spot of bother from the word go as they lost Ganguly (4) and Sachin Tendulkar (32) in the seventh and the eighth over respectively. Soon, Rahul Dravid (13) was also run-out.

After a 93-run partnership with Badani, VVS Laxman (51) also became a victim of a run-out. Wickets kept on falling at regular intervals from this point. Badani got dismissed in the penultimate over. He ended up scoring 100 (98) with the help of 10 fours and two sixes. For Australia, Damien Fleming, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Bracken picked up a couple of wickets each.

India ended up scoring 248-9 in 50 overs. As luck would have it, Badani’s efforts resulted in vain as Australia won the match by 8 wickets on the back of Mark Waugh’s 18th ODI century. He scored 133* (138) with the help of 15 fours and a six.
