Dean Elgar has expressed his desire to lead South Africa’s cricket team in Test Cricket. Elger reveals he wants to succeed Faf du Plessis and given a chance to captain the SA team in the longest format of the game.

Elgar along with Aiden Markram and Keshav Maharaj are amongst the CSA players who have publically expressed interest in the job.

CSA is still thinking about candidates to take over the Test captaincy and be the successor of Faf du Plessis.  Faf Du Plessis stepped down as the captain after suffering from three straight series defeats. The last defeat came in a home series to England at the start of the year.

De Kock replaced Faf as the limited-overs captain following a dismissal performance in the ODI World Cup last year. Quinton de Kock was expected to take captain CSA across all 3 formats after an impressive show in the limited-overs matches. However, CSA said it did not want to overburden him and said revealed why De Kock won’t be in running for test captaincy.

“It’s definitely not an easy journey being a test captain. But, I think leadership is something that comes extremely naturally to me.  I’ve captained teams in the past. Right up from school level to the provincial level and at the franchise level. I enjoyed it extremely. If I was asked to take on the captaincy it’s definitely something I would think long and hard about. It would mean a lot to me,” Elgar said.

Elgar has already captained the South African team twice. Once against England in the 2017 Lords test and in early 2019 with a 107-run victory against Pakistan.
