Batting in the 3rd innings of the Sheffield Shield game between New South Wales and Tasmania, the veteran pacer, Mitchell Starc scored an unbeaten 86*. However, he failed to surpass the three-figure mark for the first time in first-class cricket after NSW captain Peter Nevill declared the innings, in the 3rd session of Day 3, at 522/6(d).

The seasoned Australian fast bowler was evidently frustrated as Satrc swung his bat off his grip and down to the ground during his walk back to the dressing room. Mitchell Starc, in his 103 first-class matches, hasn’t scored a single century but has a 99 against India, in Mohali, when Australia toured the sub-continent in 2013.

With just an hour left to Stumps on Day 3, NSW skipper took the decision of declaring the innings soon after Sean Abbott reached his ton. Besides Abbott, Nick Larkin and Moises Henriques were the two other centurions for NSW in their 2nd innings.

By doing so, New South Wales set a target of 348 for Tasmania and also got them under the lights for 13 overs on Day 3. The plan worked perfectly for Peter Neville as veteran pacer Trent Copeland managed to scalp the wickets of Tasmania openers Charlie Wakim and Jordan Silk under the lights before the Stumps leaving them at 26/2.

With Starc’s frustration over a personal milestone that was relatable to the fans, Peter Nivell’s captaincy call was justified by Copeland’s bowling in the last hour of the third day. New South Wales will have to bag 8 more wickets while Tasmania to chase 322 more runs to win on the final day of the match.

It was a major bounceback from NSW considering they were bowled all out for just 64 in the 1st innings. From there to take a huge lead after putting up a total of 522/6(d) in the 3rd innings meant Nevill’s team are eyeing for a remarkable win.
