Former Australian leg-spinner, Shane Warne immensely criticized the umpiring standards in the first day-night Test between India and Australia. Warne was particularly critical of umpire Bruce Oxenford, who he said had ‘made too many mistakes’ in the game. The incident took place in the 63rd over when it looked like Ravichandran Ashwin had managed to get the wicket of Nathan Lyon in front of the stumps, but the ball had taken a significant edge of the bat.

The Indian bowlers appealed and umpire Bruce Oxenford decided to give it out, only for Lyon to immediately review the decision and get it upturned.

Talking about the same during the commentary on Sony Sports, Shane Warne said, “To me when you watch that live, it was always going down the legside a little bit, but because of umpire’s call it is still in play, and that was maybe just hitting or maybe just missing. But because he gave him out, it’s going down the legs, and maybe it is clipping and it is given.”

He further added, “He can cost Joe Burns his grieve, all these mistakes. No one likes to make mistakes and you don’t want to pick on an umpire. But he has made too many in my opinion in this game.”

The reference to Australia opener Joe Burns wicket was because the ball was only edging the stumps quite marginally. Bruce Oxenford gave it out, and although the host took the DRS, Burns had to depart because of the ‘umpire’s call’.

Eventually, the Aussies were bundled out of 191 in the last session of Day 2 conceding the lead of 53 runs in the first innings to India. At the end of the second day, the visitors are at 9/1 with Prithvi Shaw back in the hut and Mayank Agarwal staying at the crease with night-watchman Jasprit Bumrah.
