Exactly 24 years ago, former Indian captain, Anil Kumble, had registered his maiden ODI five-wicket haul and career-best figures of 6.1-2-12-6 against West Indies in a ‘Man of the Match’ performance.

He achieved the feat during the final of Hero Cup at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Richie Richardson, the then West Indian captain, had won the toss and chose to field. In their allotted quota of 50 overs, India scored 225/7. Vinod Kambli, who came in to bat at No. 3, was the highest-scorer as he scored 68 (90) with the help of six fours.

For West Indies, with bowling figures of 10-1-38-3, Anderson Cummins was the pick of the bowlers.

West Indies’ innings never really got going. They lost wickets at regular intervals right from the start so much so that they got bundled out for 123 in 40.1 overs. Apart from Kumble, Kapil Dev had picked up two and Manoj Prabhakar and Sachin Tendulkar had picked up a wicket each.
