IPL 2021 Suspended For Indefinite Time, As SRH Players Test Covid-19 Positive

Having hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was expected to resume on Tuesday, with the match between Sunrises Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 for an indefinite time after several players and support staff tested positive for COVID-19.

As per the reports of ANI, the development has been confirmed by Vice-President BCCI Rajeev Shukla. The decision was on was on the expected lines after Monday’s IPL 2021 match between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad being suspended after the Knight Riders’ spinner Varun Chakravarthy and seam bowler Sandeep Warrier tested positive for Covid-19.

According to IPL Governing Council members, the decision was taken after Amit Mishra (Delhi Capitals) and Wriddhiman Saha (Sunrisers Hyderabad) too tested positive on Tuesday. Multiple BCCI officials and the franchises have confirmed the development.

Earlier, two KKR players, Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier have been tested positive. Apart from them, On Sunday, three members of the Chennai staff were reported to have tested positive for Covid-19 including owling coach Laxmipathy Balaji, CEO Kasi Viswanathan, and a bus cleaner. Fortunately, all the players were tested negative after the test that was conducted on  Sunday.

Delhi Capitals’ official website has also confirmed that they are also serving quarantine as they had played their last game against KKR. With the duration of isolation not yet known, they are uncertain as to when they will resume the practice sessions. KKR players are also undergoing hard quarantine.

The statement on DC’s website read, “As we had played our last game against KKR, we have been advised to go into quarantine and all of us are in isolation. We are all in our rooms. We don’t have any information if that practice session will go ahead.”
