UAE Likely To Host The T20 World Cup After The IPL Cancellation

On Tuesday, The BCCI has decided to cancel the 14th edition of the India Premier League with immediate effect after four players have been tested positive for the deadly virus despite being in the bio-bubble. Since the league has been postponed now, the question raised over the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup as well, which is scheduled to take place in India later this year.

However, there is time for the mega event and it can be understood that the ICC will continue to monitor the situation in India as the country is currently struggling with the second wave of the COVID-19. Meanwhile, the UAE, which had hosted the Indian Premier League last year, has been on the list as a backup venue as well and it is now becoming a more realistic place to host the mega event as well.

Notably, the T20 World Cup, comprising 16 countries, is slated to take place in India later this year with the final played on November 14 as well. Moreover, the BCCI has shortlisted nine venues in India to host the marquee tournament as well. Meanwhile, an ICC team of experts from the biosafety, events and security wings was about to visit India from April 26 to have a look at the venues but they were forced to cancel the plan due to the travel ban imposed by the UAE to and from India as the country have been fighting the deadly virus.

It is also noteworthy that, this week India have crossed the 20-million mark for positive cases, and the deadly virus has brought the entire country to a standstill with its second wave. The numbers have been increasing daily too. As far as IPL 2021 is concerned, the BCCI had decided to host this across six venues as well.

However, a few players had left due to bubble fatigue even before the ban was imposed on the passenger flights as well as the IPL 2021 got cancelled.   Currently, the concerns over there for the overseas players to reach their respective countries amid this situation as several countries have already banned travellers, including the citizens of their own country, if they were returning from India.

On Tuesday, a senior BCCI official has said that a call will be taken later on the T20 World Cup as it has time for the event. However, the next meeting of the ICC Board is likely to take place in July, it is expected that the global body will ask their members to meet before that to decide things as well.
