The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended abruptly until further notice with a lot of players and members of support staff testing positive for COVID-19 cases and the bio-bubble provided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deemed unsafe. Under such circumstances, while the Indian players were finding it difficult to reach home, it was the foreign players who found themselves in the middle of a very peculiar situation.

International players, especially the Australian players experienced an exodus after their own government banned travel from India for 14 days. The lack of direct flights to other countries in such testing times has made things difficult for the athletes, commentators, and coaching staff members to travel back home.

On Wednesday, the BCCI confirmed that they are finding ways to transport the players through Sri Lanka or the Maldives where they can undergo the 14-day mandatory quarantine tenure before taking a flight to their country.

However, now the Mumbai Indians stepped up and volunteered to offer multiple chartered flights for the countries like New Zealand, South Africa, and the Caribbean in order to help their players reach their families safely. They have also extended the invitation to the seven franchises of the league to have their players get a spot on these chartered planes.

However, since the Mumbai Indians do not have any England cricketers on their roster, they haven’t planned for chartered flights towards the United Kingdom as of now.

Talking about the English players, ECB in their statement said, “Following the postponement of IPL 2021, we are in close contact with our players and staff in India as arrangements are put in place for them to return home safely. Thanks to the BCCI for its commitment to do everything in its powers to arrange for the secure and safe passage of all those taking part in the competition. Our thoughts remain with the people of India during these challenging times.”
