However, Shubman Gill made his Test debut during India’s Australia tour of 2020-21 and helped his side win in a four-match series 2-1. Since then, he has amassed 378 runs including three half-centuries with his brilliant skill and amazing temperament as well.

“He (Gill) has the temperament to become a great player,” Sunil Gavaskar said on the second day while commentating during the ongoing World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand in Southampton as well.

However, Shubman Gill has opened India’s innings along with another opener Rohit Sharma and together they stitched 62 runs on Day 2 as well. Gill managed to score 28 off 64, including three fours. And, the veteran has said that the first century is always tough to get and once the youngster crosses that, he will score more in future.

“The first hundred is always the toughest one because that journey from scoring a half century to reaching three figures is not that easy. Batsmen tend to feel settled somewhere around 70-80 run mark and start taking the bowlers on and lose their wicket in that way. He just needs to get his first hundred and then a lot more will follow,” Sunil Gavaskar concluded.

Meanwhile, Nasser Hussain was so impressed with their batting, as he mentioned that he ‘can’t remember India has had better openers than them who have played the short balls like this way.

“I was just about to tweet that the Indian openers are giving a masterclass on how to bat in England conditions but they both got out. They played beautifully,” Nasser Hussain said during the post-lunch show on Star Sports. “Can’t remember India have had openers that have played the short balls better than these two. So they can’t be bullied by the short-ball and technically very sound. With the England tour coming up after this, it was an important inning by Shubman Gill.”
